How 18 Values Test differs from the 16 Values Test

The 18 values test starts from the same 16 dimensions as our flagship test — equality, markets, ownership, welfare, democracy, authority, centralisation, federalism, nationalism, tradition, security, culture, science, technology, individualism and pragmatism — and adds two more that modern politics cannot ignore.

Environmentalism measures where you sit between protecting the natural environment and prioritising economic growth. Globalism measures where you sit between open borders and global cooperation on one side and self-sufficient local communities on the other.

These two axes capture questions that dominate today’s political conversations but barely existed in older political tests. Including them makes the 18 values test one of the most complete free political quizzes available anywhere.

As with all our tests, every axis is scored independently from 0 to 100 using a published formula, and your answers never leave your browser. If 18 dimensions are not enough, the 20 values test adds stability and order on top.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the 18 values test different?
The 18 values test includes all 16 dimensions of the 16 values test and adds two extra axes: environmentalism (environment versus economy-first) and globalism (global cooperation versus local control).
How many questions are there?
About 72 questions, taking roughly 7 minutes. Each question uses the same five-point answer scale.
Is there a difference between the 18 values and 20 values test?
The 20 values test adds two further axes on top of the 18: stability (continuity versus change) and order (clear social rules versus spontaneity).
Why include environmentalism as an axis?
Environmental policy is one of the most consequential political issues of our time, and most political quizzes ignore it entirely. We added it so the test reflects modern debates, not just 20th-century ones.
